I am from west Texas and growing up I didn’t really feel the pumpkin vibes until the week before Halloween; most likely because it was still ninety degrees outside and we had rolling plains instead of corn fields. This one week my mom would buy all five of us girls a mini pumpkin to draw on and a large family pumpkin for us to carve. We all had our costumes chosen and the biggest event around was Halloween on the square. It had everything a small town ten year old could ever imagine. But now we live in central North Carolina and I feel the pumpkin vibes at the same time Starbucks starts making PSL’s. We get our first cold front the end of September and by mid-October the jackets are out when the sun goes down. There are corn mazes and pumpkin patches and talk of State Fair food in the air. July will forever be my favorite month. There are firecrackers, beach trips, bar-b-ques and never ending sunshine. It is also the month I celebrate my anniversary and birthday, so that’s a bonus! I love the smell of sunscreen and wood on the fire. It brings me back to my childhood when my dad would harvest mesquite wood from our lake lot and use it to smoke a brisket almost every single weekend. He made his “secret famous BBQ sauce” that was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. My mom would make potato salad and I am probably the only human on the planet that likes it hot, when it’s fresh, so she would set some aside for me before she put it in the refrigerator to cool. I am not sure I will ever have another July day quite like those, but I do love the memories they gave me.
